Reading Resolutions 2015

Happy New Year! Like last year, I thought I’d share my reading resolutions for the year ahead. If you’ve got any resolutions of your own, please feel free to share them in the comments below – I love hearing about other people’s goals.

Here are my Reading Resolutions for 2015:

– Read More Non-Fiction –

In 2014, one of my resolutions was to read out of my comfort zone. While I did quite well, I didn’t read nearly as much non-fiction as I would have liked. So this year, I thought I’d make my goal more specific in the hope that I’ll be more successful!

My non-fiction TBR list is actually quite long so it’s not that I’m uninspired by non-fiction, but it’s more that I struggle with finding the right time to read it. I mostly read in the evenings but if I read non-fiction at night I find that it kicks my brain into gear and I start thinking about the topic and working to absorb and understand all the information – which isn’t good just before I try to go to sleep. Does anyone else have this problem?

With this in mind, my goal is to read at least 1 non-fiction title each month. If I read it alongside fiction throughout the month hopefully I’ll be able to read the book at a time when it suits me best, maybe at weekends.

– Browse Library/Bookshop Shelves More Often –

I talked about this in my How I Choose Books post but, nowadays, I mainly order books from the library thanks to recommendations from fellow bloggers. And this is great because, more often than not, I’m reading a book that I enjoy. But sometimes I do miss the more organic process of picking a book on a whim from a shelf, reading the blurb and taking the book home knowing nothing about it and having no preconceptions. This might mean that I read more books I don’t enjoy, but I could also find some new favourites.

– Take Part in a Readalong / Themed Reading Week –

I didn’t know these existed until I started blogging but I really like the idea of them – reading the same book, or same types of books, with other bloggers. It’s a really great idea and I love the thought of discussing the book(s) with other people taking part in the same event. I’m going to make an effort to participate this year, instead of only reading everyone’s posts!

– Make Time for ReReading –

I feel like I’ve mentioned rereading books quite a few times in passing in my reviews – because I reread so little, a mark of a good book for me is if I want to reread it! I think it’s time I stopped talking about rereading and actually did it. I’m not going to set a number of rereads I want to do this year, but I certainly want to make more of an effort to do it.

So those are my resolutions for this year! As well as those above, I’ll be continuing my resolution to ‘read well’ from last year. Do you have any reading goals for 2015?

  1. I’m not setting myself any specific goals this year. Can’t cope with the pressure! Love yours however. I completely sympathise with the non-fiction thing. It’s something I generally have to take in bite size chunks and, like you, a vast amount of my reading is done before bed and my poor little brain can’t cope. I’d much rather float off into fantasy land! A memoir or something might be a good balance? I read Alone in Antartica by Felicity Aston a while back and it was ace. Truly inspiring. On the re-reading front I have a ‘ten year gap’ rule. Bit easier now I’m 30!

  2. Great choice of resolutions! I completely agree with struggling to read non-fiction at night time – especially something which requires a lot of concentration. Hope you have a great 2015!

  3. Your reading resolutions sound achievable, which is always the way to go with goals. I wish you luck with all of them!

The second point you included lends a lot to my reading goal of the year; in fact I do believe we spoke about it briefly on the post you mentioned. I’m posting my book goal for the new year next Thursday, but lets just say the library is going to feature a whole lot more.

Rereading is something I adore so I hope you are able to rediscover some books that truly captured you before!

I wish you all the best for 2015, Gemma!
    🙂

  4. I agree about the difficulty of reading non-fiction in the evenings. I always have to end the reading day with something lighter – a mad serial killer, for example! – to put me in the mood for sleep. And I definitely want to do more re-reading this year too – it’s the one problem of blogging that I always have a huge list of new books other people have inspired me to read and so never seem to have time to re-read old favourites.

Good luck with your goals, and I hope 2015 is a good year for you! 🙂

  5. I’m with you on reading more non-fiction this year, and also rereading more. I spend too much time browsing for books at the library, which is why I never seem to get around to reading my own books. 🙂 I hope you have a great year of reading in 2015! I’m looking forward to reading your reviews and posts.

  6. Very sensible resolutions – I like the ‘serendipity’ of choosing a random book from the shelves, and I also want to allow more room for rereading. Plus I’ve decided not to buy any new books for at least 3 months, until I make a bit of a dent into my TBR pile.

  7. I have the same problem with reading nonfiction before bed. And I’ll often end up reaching for my phone to do a bit of googling after I put the book aside and then fall down a rabbit hole until suddenly it’s 1 a.m.

    Good luck with your goals!
